Michael Barrett

Director

Michael is a Director and the Head of our Social Welfare Law team, specialising in Housing, Mental Capacity and Community Care Law. Michael provides advice and assistance to people on a wide range of issues including homelessness and possession, anti-social behaviour injunctions, the provision of care and support in the community, and NHS funded continuing healthcare.

Michael is a member of the Law Society’s Mental Capacity (Welfare) accreditation scheme and is an Accredited Legal Representative. As such Michael can be directly appointed by the Court of Protection to represent clients who lack capacity. Michael is regularly instructed by the Official Solicitor and family members in the Court of Protection.

Michael is also a member of the Law Society Mental Health accreditation scheme and regularly represents clients detained in hospital under the mental health act.

In addition to the above Michael has a growing practice in civil committal matters, including in the Court of Protection.

Michael is committed to providing a high level of service and regularly undertakes his own advocacy work where he enjoys representing clients at Court. In the Legal 500 United Kingdom 2024 London edition, Michael is recognised as a Rising Star in the category private client: Court of Protection.

Michael is a ‘Recommended Lawyer’ in the 2017, 2018/19, 2020, 2021. 2022, 2023 and 2024 London editions of The Legal 500.

Prior to joining the firm in 2011 Michael worked for 10 years as a Physiotherapist in the NHS and charitable sectors.

In his spare time Michael enjoys running, cycling and socialising with family and friends.
